    An anonymous donor’s gift will ensure that, although they aren’t on campus, students enrolled at West Virginia University can reach out to the Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services through a 24/7 crisis text line to receive immediate assistance from a live, trained counselor – especially if they feel overwhelmed by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Even before West Virginia reported its first case of the novel coronavirus, Dr. Sally Hodder and her team recognized the need for a COVID-19 patient data registry. It was after attending a January conference at the National Institutes of Health when Hodder, an infectious disease specialist who lived through the 1980s AIDS/HIV epidemic, predicted with confidence that we’d soon have a pandemic on our hands.

  • COPD readmissions more likely for those with undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, study finds

    In a study published in Chest Journal, researchers found that patients with undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who were hospitalized with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) would be more likely to be readmitted to the hospital with complications or die.

  • Gov. Justice issues Executive Order outlining process for hospitals to resume elective medical procedures

    Gov. Jim Justice has issued an Executive Order, outlining the process for hospitals across West Virginia to apply to resume elective medical procedures, provided that certain safety thresholds are met. The earliest hospitals will be able to restart elective medical procedures is Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
